Jardim Sol de Janeiro — A Garden for the Senses

Every December, Miami Beach fills with collectors, dealers and brands angling for their attention. Sol de Janeiro's contribution to Art Basel was a modest one, and all the better for it: a garden built around Rio's street phone booths, each dedicated to a single scent and a Brazilian artist. It was a small corner of the fair that asked visitors to slow down and have a sniff.

Making something out of stock footage is a test of patience and taste. For the first of the three films, I sifted through a great deal of material to find images with the warmth and texture the brief called for, then shaped them around the voiceover, allowing the rhythm of the words to set the pace of the cut. Facundo Pires edited the other two, and we worked closely to align our distortion effects and overall look, so that each film kept its own character while clearly belonging to the same family.
